The Lagos State Government has commenced plans to build the Lekki International Airport expected to cost ₦102 billion.

The state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Adeniyi Oyemade, while addressing journalists during a press conference, said the airport upon completion, would cater for over five million passengers annually.

Oyemade revealed that an approval had been secured to conduct the topographical and geo-technical surveys of the land area earmarked for the project, while site clearance, construction of access road, the runway and perimeter fence will begin shortly.

Elaborating on the planned airport, Special Adviser to the State Governor on Commerce and Industry, Sola Oworu, whose office is saddled with the direct supervision of the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), said the international airport is conceived as public/private sector project, and plans are afoot for its take-off within the next two years.

Explaining the involvement of private investors in the development of the airport, Oworu, said it has been discovered that a second airport in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub, is commercially viable.

In pushing towards its realisation, she said the state government had already appointed financial advisers to come up with the financial obligations, among others, which will form part of the prospectus with which the state will engage prospective investors in the airport.

"We will soon send out prospectus to prospective investors; and regarding commencement, we are looking at 12 to 18 months from now," Oworu said.
