To maintain its position of competitiveness in the hospitability business, one of Africa’s largest and hotel group, Protea Hotels, has started the construction of a new three-storey hotel facility at the Alausa area of Lagos. Messer. Brick House Construction Limited is piloting the project as developers.

The hotel, which is estimated to cost about N3 billion, will contain 125 service rooms a swimming pool area, amongst others.

Other consultants appointed for the project included Project Managers -WSP Development Nigeria Limited, Architects - Ngonyanma Okpanum and Associates, Quantity Survey - BQC Consults Limited, Engineers -WSP Consulting Engineering limited/AAA Associates and Subcontractors - Cooling Care Africa Limited.

Already work has commenced at the site, beside the Elephant Cement House.

Project Manager Vincent Soretire told The Guardian that the hotel was being built to fulfill all standards set by the current Protea and African Pride Hotels.

According to him, the three-storey facility would come with all rooms en suite, automated and built with building management systems, while eight rooms will be dedicated for physically challenged individuals. There will also be provision of a ramp for wheel chairs.

He revealed that it would also come with a gymnasium, conference room that could sit 300 people, while electric fittings would come with international standard type and Internet access.

The building according to him, is due to be completed by the end of the year and should be ready for unveiling by January next year. He also revealed that a 250 capacity fire hydrant would be built to cater for fire disaster while a special sewage treatment plant is also being constructed.

Presently, Protea has about 11 hotels in Nigeria with this one set to be the 12th in its line-up.

The company was formed on July 1, 1984, with an initial base of four managed properties, which were controlled by Otto Stehlik and his partners. These properties were the Heerengracht and Capetonian Hotels in Cape Town, the Protea Gardens Hotel in Johannesburg and the San Lameer resort on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast.  The company is said to be owned 60 per cent by Bankorp and 40 per cent by Stehlik and his partners, who were also directors of the company. A rapid expansion programme followed and within a few years, Protea Hotels offers accommodation right across the three-, four- and five-star spectrum.
